Although the laws surrounding when it needs to occur can vary from state to state, as a general rule, in order for a person to legally drive their car or motorcycle on any major highway or street, their vehicles must be registered by the state in which they live every year.
The annual vehicle registration consists of an application, a renewal fee, and perhaps what is most important, documented proof that the vehicle has passed a smog and emissions test. This test involves a certified mechanic thoroughly inspecting the vehicle to insure that it is burning fuel efficiently, and that there is no sign of harmful pollutants that will enter the air.
If a vehicle does not pass inspection, regardless of how new or clean it may appear to the natural eye, repairs must be made immediately.
Whenever you and I enter into something new, there is often a tendency to assume that everything about us is new as well. With resolutions and goals written down, and a renewed hope in what the future will bring, we often lose sight that what we expect from God, He first must inspect in us.
“Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
In 2 Corinthians 5:16-17, the Apostle Paul wrote these words in a letter to believers living in a city called Corinth, located just a few miles west of Athens. Despite the panoramic beauty of their ancient city, and their newfound excitement concerning their faith in God, they were still struggling with the idea of taking what was old into what was supposed to be new. Serving as that city’s own spiritual mechanic, Paul was not going to issue them a passing grade or sticker to place on top the plate of their hearts until they fully understood how important internal inspections are to God.
If there is still something you are still holding onto from last year, or perhaps someone that has far more to do with your past than your future, now is the time to let it or them go once and for all.
Don’t allow a few small needed repairs force you into living a parked life this new year.
